Call Quality Issues
Fix audio problems, echo, choppy sound, or microphone issues during calls.
Common Audio Issues
Most call quality problems fall into a few categories. Here's how to identify and fix them.
"I can't hear the other person" - Check your speaker volume - Make sure you haven't muted your device - Try using headphones instead of speakers
"They can't hear me" - Check if you're muted in the app (look for the mute button) - Make sure your browser has microphone permission - Test your microphone in another app
"The audio is choppy or breaking up" - Your internet connection may be unstable - Close other apps that use a lot of bandwidth - Move closer to your Wi-Fi router
"There's an echo" - Use headphones instead of speakers - Lower your speaker volume - Make sure you're in a quiet room
Microphone Problems
If the other person can't hear you, your microphone might not be working correctly.
Check browser permissions: 1. Look for a camera/microphone icon in your browser's address bar 2. Click it to see if the microphone is allowed 3. If blocked, change it to "Allow" and refresh the page
Test your microphone: 1. Open your computer's sound settings 2. Speak into your microphone 3. You should see the input level move
Common fixes: - If using an external microphone, make sure it's plugged in - Check that the correct microphone is selected in your browser - Close other apps that might be using the microphone - Try a different browser
Still not working? Your browser might be using the wrong microphone. In your browser's site settings, you can choose which microphone to use for our app.
Speaker Problems
If you can't hear the other person, the issue is usually with your speaker or audio output.
Quick checks: 1. Make sure your device isn't on silent or muted 2. Check that the volume is turned up 3. Try clicking anywhere on the page (some browsers require interaction before playing audio)
Select the right output: Your computer might be sending audio to the wrong speaker. Check your sound settings and make sure the correct output is selected.
Try headphones: If your speakers aren't working, plug in headphones. This also helps prevent echo for the other person.
Browser audio: Some browsers have per-tab audio settings. Make sure the app's tab isn't muted. Look for a speaker icon on the browser tab.
Echo and Feedback
Echo happens when the other person's voice comes out of your speaker and gets picked up by your microphone.
The best fix: Use headphones Headphones prevent audio from your speakers from reaching your microphone. This eliminates echo completely.
If you can't use headphones: - Lower your speaker volume - Move your microphone away from your speakers - Use a directional microphone that picks up less background sound - Enable echo cancellation if your browser supports it
The other person hears echo? The problem is on their end, not yours. Ask them to use headphones or lower their volume.
Feedback (squealing sound): This happens when the microphone and speaker create a loop. Lower the volume immediately and use headphones to prevent it.
Network Requirements
Voice calls need a stable internet connection to work well. Here's what to check.
Minimum requirements: - Stable broadband or 4G/5G mobile connection - Low latency (under 150ms is ideal) - At least 100 kbps bandwidth for calls
Signs of network problems: - Words getting cut off or delayed - Robotic or distorted voice - Call dropping unexpectedly - Long pauses before audio comes through
How to improve your connection: - Connect to Wi-Fi instead of mobile data if possible - Move closer to your router - Pause large downloads or streaming - Close other tabs and apps - Try a wired ethernet connection for the best quality
VPN issues: If you use a VPN, it may add latency to your calls. Try disconnecting your VPN to see if call quality improves.
Browser Compatibility
Not all browsers work equally well for voice calls. Here's what we recommend.
Best browsers for calls: - Chrome (recommended) - Firefox - Edge (Chromium-based) - Safari on Mac
Browsers to avoid: - Older versions of any browser - Safari on Windows (discontinued) - Internet Explorer
Update your browser: Make sure you're running the latest version of your browser. Outdated browsers can have audio issues.
Clear browser cache: If you've been having persistent issues, clearing your browser's cache can help reset things.
Permissions check: After updating your browser, you may need to re-allow microphone access. Look for the permission prompt when you make your first call.
Try incognito mode: If calls work in incognito but not in your regular browser, a browser extension might be causing the issue. Try disabling extensions one by one to find the culprit.
