Messages Not Sending
Troubleshoot message delivery issues and understand why texts might not reach leads.
Why Messages Might Not Send
There are several reasons a message might not reach your lead. The most common causes are:
- Lead opted out - They replied STOP at some point
- Invalid phone number - The number is disconnected or incorrect
- Carrier filtering - The carrier blocked the message
- Landline number - Text messages can't be sent to landlines
Each of these has a different solution, which we'll cover below.
Lead Opted Out
When someone replies "STOP" to a message, they're removed from receiving future texts. This is required by law.
How to know if someone opted out: Look at the conversation in your app. Opted-out leads will show a notice that messages are blocked.
Can they opt back in? Yes. If the lead texts you again (any message), they're automatically opted back in. You can also ask them to text "START" to your number.
Good to know: You cannot manually override an opt-out. The lead must initiate contact again themselves.
Invalid Phone Numbers
Messages to invalid numbers will fail immediately.
Common reasons a number is invalid: - Typo when the lead entered their number - The number has been disconnected - It's not a real phone number (test data, fake submissions)
What you can do: 1. Double-check the phone number in your conversation details 2. Try reaching the lead through another channel if you have their email 3. Mark spam leads appropriately to keep your list clean
Tip: SalesPartner checks phone numbers before sending and will flag numbers that can't receive texts.
Carrier Filtering
Mobile carriers (like Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) filter messages to protect their customers from spam.
Common triggers for carrier filtering: - Too many messages sent too quickly - Shortened URLs (like bit.ly links) - Certain words that trigger spam filters - Messages that look like mass marketing
How SalesPartner helps: - Messages are sent at natural intervals, not all at once - Your business is registered with carriers for better delivery - Conversations are personalized, not generic blasts
If you suspect carrier filtering: Wait 15-30 minutes before sending to that lead again. The message may have been delayed rather than blocked.
Landline Numbers
Text messages can only be sent to mobile phones. Landlines (including many business phone numbers) cannot receive SMS.
How to identify a landline: SalesPartner automatically checks if a number can receive texts before sending. If a number is flagged as a landline, messages won't be sent.
What to do: - If you have the lead's mobile number, update their contact information - Try reaching them through email or phone call instead - Some VoIP services (like Google Voice) can receive texts even though they look like landlines
Message Content Issues
Some message content is more likely to have delivery problems.
Avoid these in your messages: - Shortened URLs (bit.ly, tinyurl, etc.) - ALL CAPS TEXT - Excessive special characters or emojis - Content about restricted topics
Best practices for delivery: - Keep messages conversational and personalized - Use your full business name - Include your website URL in full form if needed - Make it clear who's reaching out
Checking Delivery Status
You can see whether messages were delivered in your conversation view.
Message status indicators: - Sending - Message is being processed - Delivered - Message reached the carrier network - Failed - Message could not be sent (check the reason)
If a message shows "Failed": Look for the failure reason in the message details. Common reasons include invalid number, opted out, or carrier rejection.
